Quick follow-up on my research regarding the great "cash vs. debit card in the grocery store line" debate: I spoke to a professional.

A delightful young lass named Arielle (no relation to my ladyfriend Arielle, although that would be unusual because people are rarely related through first names) was ringing me up at my local Stop and Shop last evening. As is usually the case, the mouthbreather in front of me was having oodles of trouble manipulating the card reader on the debit machine. After about 24 frustrating minutes, he cleared out and I ventured to pose the cash vs. debit card question to young Arielle. I received the following response and I quote:

"Oh my God, cash is so much quicker. I wish everyone would pay with cash."

But people, my case is far from rested. I don't expect you to take my or Arielle's word for it. Next time you're in line at the supermarket, ask your cashier which method of payment he or she prefers. After all, who knows more about this subject than the people who deal with it every day for excruciating eight-hour shifts? Report back here with data.

I'm feeling pretty good that my hypothesis will stand. But please prove me wrong. I love science.

I have no one to ask. I was in and out of there before the person in the line with an actual cashier even moved up a spot in line.

Self check out. You need to stop relying on the Youth of America to help you make your point.

Also, playing "Grocery Store" with your girlfriend does not create valid evidence towards your case. Nice try though.

the promotion of cashlessness is all corporate propeganda. That caffeteria comercial where cash brings the works to a halt. propeganda! Cash is anonymous, cash is good. They want us moving away from it so we make better wage-slaves. And so they can more easily track us as consumers. For marketing or more nefarious reasons doesn't matter.

You used to be a schlub who could plop down $.65 for a T token and be on your anonymous schlub way, now they can track your movements through your charlie card which is tied to your credit. You used to huck a quarter into a basket on the pike, now they send you a printout every month of where you've been. THere's rfid tags in all those tap cards that can be accessed by anyone with a $100 scanner and a brain. don't tell me that we're more than 10 years from them saying... just implant this chip in your wrist please. it will make things so EEEEEEASY for you.

Use cash. be anonymous. buy guns, move to waco. etc.

Don't get me wrong - I think debit cards are a great idea. I just cannot be trusted with immediate access to my entire checking account. Things won't end well.

I'll buy that.

But when you buy it, will you use cash or a debit card?
