Rumble On
Did you hear? WBCN has decided to continue with their little Rock & Roll Rumble sham, even though Scamper is ineligible to ever participate again. Frankly, I'm aghast.

Somebody's going to have to pry this tiara from my filthy dishpan hands.

But without further ado about nothing, onwardforthwith with my annual tradition of handicapping this thing for you!

Sunday April 1

The Octave Museum
The Silver Lining
The Appreciation Post
The Larkin Brigade

Nate's take: The other bands are fun, and have keyboards and fiddles and shit, but if anyone other than The Silver Lining takes this night, I'll eat my hat.

Monday April 2
Cassavettes
Aloud
The Ark Royal
Baker

Nate's take: I hate it when my favorite bands are up against one another. Poop and curses. With all due respect and adoration for the lads and lass in Baker, I'm gonna have to give this one to Aloud, if for no other reason than they should have been in this thing like three years ago. But Baker could underdog this one, and that'd be zexxy.

Tuesday April 3
Age Rings
Protokoll
My Little Radio
Strictly For the Birds

Nate's take: I only just recently discovered Age Rings, and they're goooood, and fresh off SXSW to boot. My Little Radio is super shiny girly power pop (which served Scamper just fine last year), and I'd probably give it to them save for the presence of Protokoll, who are just above and fucking beyond, man.

Thursday April 5
Six Day Slide
The Indefinite Article
UV Protection
The Self-Righteous Brothers

Nate's take: Oof, I don't know jack about these bands. Here, I'll make hasty and inaccurate judgements based on 30 second MySpace listens. 6DS: too predictable. TIA: too unpredictable. UVP: this year's C4RT (that's good!), but a little more stoned (that's not good!). TSRB: pop and Pavement. And snyths! I'll throw it to The Self-Righteous Brothers, because they play with Baker all the time and Baker knows what's up.

Friday April 6
The Welch Boys
Meet the Day
Township
Kid:Nap:Kin

Nate's take: This here is a diverse night. By which I mean "weird." Welch Boys is shit-stompin' punk. Meet the Day is Guster meets Phish, with a shit-ton of swoony college fangirls. Township features ex-members of Runner and the Thermodynamics, which lends them a good amount of "pro" and "cred." And Kid:Nap:Kin reminds me of last year's semifinalists Appomattox, with their angular indie thing. MTD could win over a judge or two with all the harmony and pretty and such, but I'll (kind of randomly) go with Kid:Nap:Kin because I like punctuation.

Saturday April 7
My So-Called Friend
The Vital Might
Hepburn
Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves

Nate's take: My apologies to everyone else, but Eli Reed is going to rip your heads off. Musically. And win the whole Rumble, by the way. Dude's mad talented and well-dressed.

Thoughts? Notions?

Scene 2.0
Howdy, biscuits.

Welcome welcome (and welcome!) to your new, and possibly improved, Scene column. I'll still be providing you with timely and convenient links to upcoming shows of note and bands of glory, all cheeky and snarky like, but now we're in full-blown blog format, giving you the opportunity to tell me I don't know my noggin from my teakettle when it comes to the latest hot rock lixx.

Your beloved (and still relevant) March 2007 edition is below; the rest of the archives will be dribbling back in as I find the time to drag it all over here to Blogger.

Let's interact! Tell me what bands I should be listening to. Tell me about shows you attend. Tell me all the things you've seen. The future of the Scene is in all of our hands, now.

All Those Beasts Will Come
Mind if we skip the small talk and nitty gritty this month and get right down to brass tacks? What the hell does that mean? How about, in honor of Brendo, we get down to bass tracks instead? Why are we honoring Brendo? Because he's smoooooooth. Smooth like old lunchmeat.

I have a fever.

Okay here's your double burger.

Have you heard? Hennessy's Upstairs is now booking rock shows. Indie rockers carrying gear around Faneuil Hall is always funny. We'll be doing it in May.

Late to the Bandwagon: Go visit Bishop Allen and download everything they have to offer. Better yet, buy their entire monthly EP collection from 2006.

I'll get to that Rumble stuff next time.

Nyquil!
